Preview: This Southern League Cup tie has become so low-key its almost being played in secret, and it seems as if two experimental teams will take the field at Worcester's St. George's Lane tonight. Evesham United are the tenants at the ground while their own new home is being built, but unlike City the time in rented accommodation seems to have done The Robins little harm, lying 8th in the Midland Division and well placed with games in hand. Even more impressive and ominous has been their cup form, losing out only in a replay to Blue Square Premier Halifax in the FA Cup having knocked out Halesowen and Bromsgrove and also dispatched Corby in the FA Trophy. We've been steadily improving ourselves and are now seven games unbeaten, but its unlikely form will mean much with both managers looking to give games to fringe players and triallists, probably in difficult conditions after several days heavy rain. It seems rather sad that the Southern League Cup is reduced to more or less a Noddy Cup competition, and although you can see why managers are loathe to risk injuries to key players from City's perspective the chances to get our hands on a trophy of any description would have some value. However the timing of this re-arranged tie hardly helps, although the result would be decided tonight the next round is scheduled against Sutton Coldfield next week - City already have a home league game against Cirencester lined up and may yet have the distraction of a FA Trophy replay to fit in too.

Evesham are building a good squad and seem likely to be one of the favourites for promotion back from the Midland Division this season having just lost out in the play-offs last year in their first season since relegation. Full-back Danny Hodnett played several games for us on loan last season but is now with Evesham after moving from Worcester, while their main goal threat is top scorer Mark Owen. Whether either features remains to be seen as manager Paul West has indicated he intends to give run-outs to several players lacking in match sharpness, and is also recalling defender Peter Wood back from loan at Dudley Town. City have a long injury list and further key players are likely to be rested ahead of Saturday's FA Trophy tie against Uxbridge. That gives another chance to young keeper Elliott Seddon and a likely debut for youth team defender Matt Sysum. Several triallists will also get a chance to shine: Bristol Manor Farm's pacey forward Troy Simpson gets another run-out after appearing in a friendly game for us back in the Spring, while former Ciren midfielder Dan Hilder and former Swindon schoolboy Karl Palmer will also feature. Although the teams may not be packed full of experience that often makes for a more entertaining and whole-hearted game, and once the teams cross the touchline hopefully they'll want to win...
