Local knowledge: "Travelling to watch City at the weekend?"
"Hitchin?" "Well I was thinking of getting the train."
(I use it every year and it makes me happy). If you are planning a trip
you'll find out nothing you need below. The town is sandwiched between
Luton and Stevenage on the River Hiz, but the football club itself has
more to boast of having been one of just 17 clubs to contest the first
ever FA Cup competition back in the 1870s. Despite their longevity Hitchin
have never really written their name across the skies, but the ground
is a welcoming place and you sense it is a club slowly progressing in
the right way having won the Southern League Cup two years ago and seeming
to have moved beyond years of financial struggling. The terraces are
also entertainingly bouncy wooden planks - you make your own fun at
this level of the game...
Hitchin itself is in essence still a market town with a 30,000 population
who find just about everything they need to get by although there's
precious little to make anyone else head here. The market square is
pretty though with Tudor and Georgian buildings, but little sign of
what people do for fun. That said this place has a reputation as the
nice town where people to go to escape from the 'fun' in Stevenage,
Luton and some of the other commuter hell-holes nearby. They used to
sell a lot of wool here, and may well still do quietly - perhaps taking
advantage of the ever expanding illicit grey economy based on tax-free
cardigans and pullovers. If your looking for a pint The Victoria is
on the walk from the station and serves a good range of real beer while
the Nightingale closer to the train station also has a big screen if
you need a pre-match match. In town the Red Hart is a big old market
pub while the King's Arms off the main square is a good place for a
quieter pint.
See below for travel directions and advice. A preview of City's next
match and team news can be found here.
