Johnston is believed to have been a player long tracked by City manager Tim Harris who was quick to offer Johnston a chance to return to Southern League football when long-serving Gloucester keeper Matt Bath opted to leave the club in the knowledge that his manager was tracking other players to compete for his first team place. The keeper had previously made a fleeting contribution to the season, sitting on the City bench as an unused sub in that epic FA Trophy tie against Tiverton that was finally settled in a penalty shoot-out. Johnston may have a hard act to follow but he has plenty of experience and arrives with a reputation as a competent shot-stopper and someone who can organsie his defence in front of him. With City shipping goals at an alarming rate the young keeper will have plenty of City fans wishing him well. |

Johnston began his career progressing though the Bristol Rovers youth set-up, capped by England at junior level before earning a one year pro contract with The Gas. On his release into the non-league game Johnston took up a job as a postie and spent a period playing mostly reserve team football with Bath City and had a spell with Western League Frome Town before getting his first taste of regular first team action at this level with Clevedon Town. Johnston impressed at the North Somerset club who he helped to glory as title winners of the Southern League's West One Division. He joined City from a second spell with promotion chasing Western League outfit Frome Town and is understandbly keen to prove himself at this level of football, and realistically has the rest of this campaign to earn himself a long-term future at Meadow Park. Ray joins us from Frome Town and is looking forward to the challenge of stepping up to Southern League Premier level. |
